Canada the first to ban hormone-disruptive BPA chemicals from baby bottles

Awareness of baby feeding products with BPA among Australian parents has heightened sharply after recent reports from around the world. BPA has attracted growing attention as more and more research confirms that the chemical in products (such as baby bottles) can leach out and be subsequently consumed.

On 19th April 2008 Canada became the first country to ban a widely found chemical from use in baby bottles, spurring the U.S. Senate to call for legislation that would prohibit use of bisphenol A, or BPA, in everyday consumer products.

What is BPA?
Bisphenol A (BPA) is an estrogen-mimicking chemicals found in some plastic. It is a developmental, reproductive, and neural toxicant found in polycarbonate plastic - the material used to make the vast majority of baby bottles.

This compound could potentially be posing some risk to the brain development of babies and children and may cause early puberty in girls and breast tissue development in boys. It is the main chemical used to make the common clear polycarbonate baby bottles. This chemical can leach from the plastic into the milk, and this is more an issue when the bottle has been heated or is scratched or no longer clear in appearance.

What can I use as an alternative to plastic bottles containing BPA?
makeUwell.com.au offers two safe alternatives to baby bottles containing BPA - the Happy Baby® Steadiflow range and the Green to Grow range.

Happy Baby® Steadiflow bottle range is chosen by most major maternity and children's hospitals across Australia and are the only manufacturer of infant glass bottles in Australia. They make it so easy to find and remove milk deposits. The embossed measurements are distinct and accurate and they won't rub off over time.

Happy Baby® Steadiflow glass bottles are *bisphenol A (BPA), phthalate, PVC and polycarbonate-free. These are the chemicals which leach out of plastic bottles in to your baby's milk when heated. Make the switch to glass bottles, not only are they safer, but they will last longer, therefore saving you money!

Green to Grow have developed a baby bottle that is free from the hormone-disrupting chemical BPA - the modern parents' solution when searching for a safe baby bottle. Already receiving rave reviews in the US they have finally hit Australian shores! Green to Grow baby bottles are specifically formulated to be free of Bisphenol-A (BPA), Phthalates, PVC, Nitrosamines and Lead.

So what are Green to Grow bottles made from?
They are made from a safer, more durable plastic called PES (Polyethersulfone) which isn't porous or reactive. It neither leaches chemicals nor absorbs odours. PES can withstand changes in temperature, remaining stable over many uses, including hundreds of stints in the dishwasher and steriliser (these bottles will last more than 1 child!). Green to Grow teats are made from the highest grade medical silicone.

So, why trust Green to Grow?
The founders of Green to Grow (parents themselves) believe that parents will make the best decisions for their child when equipped with the knowledge and access to healthy alternatives at reasonable prices.

Green to Grow offer parents this knowledge by periodically publishing the results of independent laboratory chemical tests for their products on their website. Green to Grow bottles have passed the European EN 14350 standard - the highest safety certification standard in the world. By working with experts around the world, performing thorough testing with thirdparty laboratories, and accepting your child's health and safety as a personal responsibility - you won't need to worry any more.

Green to Grow has also demonstrated its commitment to sustainability, responsible manufacturing and ethical business practices in a variety of ways:

  • 100% recycled paper packaging
  • all packaging is printed using soy inks
  • member of the "1% for the Planet Program", donating 1% of all sales to varied charities
  • creation of the "Bottles to Babies Program"

Happy Baby® Steadiflow and Green to Grow bottles are available from makeUwell.com.au or phone 1300 55 36 45.
