Australian Parenting Blog Blitzes International Weblog Awards

AN Australian parent and baby lifestyle website created by a stay-at-home Sydney mum has been named one of the best blog sites in the world in an international weblog competition.

Babyology was the only Australian site among the ten finalists in its category for the respected 2008 Weblog Awards. It came runner-up in the Best Blog Design category in the awards, which began in 2003 and are now the world’s largest.

The site, created by stay-at-home mum Mandi Gunsberger less than two years ago, is visited by more than 40,000 modern mummies, hip dads and style-conscious grandparents every month. It is updated daily with cool finds and ideas for babies, toddlers, children and their parents from well-known and independent designers and sources here in Australia and around the globe.

Among the most popular blog entries for Australian parents are posts about “it” prams, designer nappy bags and cots and decorative items for the nursery. Posts featuring designer-label baby and kids clothes, high-end high-chairs, toys, and gadgets that make family life easier, are also popular.

“We are thrilled to be recognized alongside some of the best blog sites in the world. It’s an amazing result for our little blog, especially when you consider we’ve only been up and running for a relatively short time,’’ Ms Gunsberger said.

Ms Gunsberger, 33, created Babyology after giving up work as an event manager and film talent agent following the birth of her first child. Now a mother of two, she puts the blog together each night from the dining room table of her Sydney home after putting daughters Hayley, 2, and Polly, 1, to bed. Her husband Ben Gunsberger, a computer animator who has worked on films including The Matrix and Happy Feet, helped design the site.

The site - at www.babyology.com.au - now gets more than 200,000 hits per month and recently created its own presence on social-networking site Facebook.

A total two million visitors cast a record 933,022 votes over 48 categories in this year’s Weblog Awards. The winners were announced earlier this month. It is the first year Babyology has entered the awards.
