new book: Choosing Child Care: A Guide to Choosing Quality Child Care

The ultimate guide - an easy to read, must have book telling parents everything they need to know about finding and using a child care centre in Australia. It gives many real life examples based on both the author's extensive work history in centres and being a parent faced with the prospect of finding a child care centre.

"The Perfect Centre" is what all parents want, and should expect, before they entrust the safety and well being of their child to its staff. Making this important decision to place your child into one of Australia's centre is often more unsettling and traumatic for you than it is for your child! Ruth's aim for the book is to leave parents feeling confident and reassured about choosing the perfect centre for their family.

Choosing Child Care:

  • takes you step by step through the process of finding the perfect centre, from the first phone call to settling visits
  • gives you key information on factors that work together to ensure quality care
  • addresses parents' anxieties, giving practical strategies to support families in the transition into a centre, whether this is on a full time or part time basis.
  • offers some suggestions/strategies for accessing the centre of your choice. Given the sometimes hard and frustrating task of finding a place at a centre, parents can also feel they have limited options. Ultimately all families deserve a centre that supports your family values and offers the highest quality care. 
  • provides parents with knowledge of the standards that should be met in the day to day running of the centre, and
  • details the management of centres and parents' involvement

About the Author
Ruth Powell has been studying and working with children for over 20 years, starting with her first job at 15 as an assistant Child Carer and a Diploma in Child Care soon after. Her career since then has included:

  • Director of both small and large centres in Perth, Canberra and Cairns
  • Validator for the National Child Care Accreditation Council
  • Consultancy work (writing policies, research)
  • Bachelor of Social Science (Children and Family Studies)
  • Mother of two young children, and most recently,
  • The 'work' (passion) of writing this book.

Vanessa Beesley is:

  • Ruth's sister
  • a mum
  • an English teacher (BA DipEd), and
  • pedantic about possessive apostrophes and apostrophes in general
