Developed by a leading pediatric dentist based in Boston Massachusetts, Dr David Tesini has been looking after children’s teeth and their oral development for over 30 years.

Dr Tesini says:

‘You can imagine in my time as a pediatric dentist I have seen thousands of babies and children who needed a little help from dentists like me to give them the perfect smiles their parents wish for them.

Two of the habits that can greatly influence a child’s oral development are thumb or finger sucking and using a dummy or soother; both of which can directly affect the position of the teeth and the bite. Sucking on a conventional soother can alter the shape of the roof of the mouth and this in turn may affect a child’s bite, a situation that can eventually require correction through appliances like a brace or an expander.

Over time, the more cases I saw of this collapsed arch in the palate, the more determined I was to do something to try to improve it. Working alongside a biomedical engineer we developed a soother that really does have orthodontic advantages – the Closer to Nature soother.

When a baby uses a traditional soother he sucks hard to hold it in place in his mouth. The tongue curls around it and creates a wave like motion as the baby sucks and swallows, while the roof of the mouth, called the palate, is maneuvered into more of a banana shaped arch with the teat collapsing as the baby sucks.

Our design for the new Closer to Nature comforter is fundamentally different. It gently expands across the palate to support it, like opening an umbrella, allowing the teeth to take up their proper positions and keep the tongue in the correct position during sucking. It fits in the mouth naturally – like a nipple during breastfeeding, to support the palate and maintain its natural shape.’

The Look and Feel…
The new Closer to Nature comforters have a distinctive tear drop ‘button’ and a silicone teat that flexes and stretches, instead of going flat in the mouth like more conventional comforters.

The Designs…
There are two Closer to Nature designs, all featuring Dr Tesini’s unique orthodontic teat to ensure the perfect fit for your bub:

  • Closer to Nature Pure is the ultimate newborn soother with a clear shield and pastel coloured button.
  • Closer to Nature C-Air is an open shield soother that allows the air to flow freely and helps avoid dribbles. Available with distinctive pink and blue boy/girl buttons.

Closer to Nature comforters are also available in three age stages to accommodate your baby’s growing mouth (0-3, 3-6, 6-18). Using a comforter that is too small for your baby’s mouth can result in dental problems. The expanding movement of the Closer to Nature teat lets the teeth find their proper position and helps promote straight growth of teeth at any age.
