No saving Grace but donation gives life

By Paige Taylor and Lauren Wilson

  • Parents donate organs of 11-month-old killed in crash
  • Say donation will give sick kids a chance at happy lives
  • Urge everyone to think about organ donation

THE parents of an 11-month-old Grace Moorby, who died after a car driven by an alleged drunk driver hit her pram, have donated her organs for sick children.

Grace Moorby was being pushed by her mother in a stroller in the family's front garden in the southern Perth suburb of Thornlie on Friday when they were both hit by the red V8 Holden Monaro.

A 24-year-old man has been bailed on charges of dangerous driving causing death and driving with a blood-alcohol level more than three times the legal limit of 0.05 per cent.

Grace's parents, Tania and Jamie Moorby, moved to Western Australia recently to take advantage of the state's resources boom. Mr Moorby, an electrician, took a job with Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest's Fortescue Metals Group.

As Ms Moorby remained in hospital with serious injuries late yesterday, the couple released a statement that said in part: "One positive to come from this tragedy is that Grace's organs have been donated to help give another parent's child the chance to lead a happy and healthy life."

The Moorbys' statement
"We would like to thank everyone who has helped us during this tragic event, particularly those who came to the assistance of Tania and Grace.

"We cannot express enough thanks to the police, firemen and the paramedics, all or our neighbours and everyone else who assisted us.

"To all of my FMG workmates who looked after our home during this tragedy, we offer our heartfelt thanks. Tania and I would like also to thank all of the Fortescue Metals Group for their support in this difficult time.

"One positive to come from this tragedy is that Grace's organs have been donated to help give another parents' child the chance to lead a happy and healthy life.

"Please, everyone, think about organ donation to help someone else.

"This is a traumatic time for our family and friends, so we now ask that we be left to grieve in peace.

"And please everyone – slow down and drive safely so this type of incident cannot ever happen again.

"Thank you

"Tania and Jamie Moorby"

The pair say they have been overwhelmed by the support they have received from the community, but have asked that instead of flowers, people could donate to the St John of God neonatal unit, to help other families.

Tania remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition with internal injuries.
