Terrific Toddlers

By Mel Hayde

How can you stop your toddler from getting into everything?

Can you really turn your day from chaos into calm?

Can tantrums be avoided?

These are just some of the questions mother of three, counselor and author Mel Hayde answers in her book Terrific Toddlers or Tantrum Free Two's - Almost! Within a week of using her plan, you will notice a difference and can turn your household from chaos into calm.

"As parents, you can influence your child's behaviour, characters and choices. Isn't that great news!" says Mel. She has worked with many, many mums, almost daily for over ten years in a counselling role and regularly gets letters, emails and phone calls from mums explaining how things have changed for the better after implementing a few different ideas.

Mel's key to success is organising your day and having a flexible routine that is right for you. Benefits to parents can include an hour or more to yourself each day, a tidy house all through the day and fewer battles with your toddler each week.

Terrific Toddlers is packed with useful tips and advice such as:

  • Make your first contact in the day special, a hug or 'I love you' to set the tone for the day
  • Try whispering when you are really mad, it can calm the situation
  • Have a hobby or interest outside the children
  • Use positive language replace 'Don't hit' with 'Be Kind'
  • If your child is currently waking at 6.00am and you want to start your day at 7:30am, use an alarm clock or favourite song to signal when a child is allowed out of their bedroom
  • Remember your kitchen is not a restaurant ' do not take orders
  • After breakfast or lunch, simply wipe clean the highchair and place 2 or 3 books down to read. You can then clean the kitchen uninterrupted.

There are also chapters on toddler activities, sample routines, a Dad-to-Dad chapter and questions from mums with practical solutions. Mel Hayde is inspiring, positive and shows us how the 'terrible twos' CAN be terrific.
